Men’s Basketball Returns to Winning Ways in Rout of Richmond, 85-69

As the DMV settled in ahead of a weekend storm, George Washington's men's basketball team by contrast was out and running. In a critical league matchup with the Richmond Spiders, who were just a game behind GW in the conference standings entering play, the Revolutionaries earned the season sweep by hanging 52 points on the scoreboard before halftime, on the way to an 85-69 wire-to-wire win.

Men’s Basketball Uses Defense to Win Shootout, 99-86

On a day chock full of highlights for GW Athletics, with a women's basketball rally in the matinee at the Smith Center, an interstitial between hoops games with an alumni reunion of all sports from all eras of George Washington athletics, and the nightcap celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Charles E. Smith Center, it seemed only fitting that men's basketball defended all that the proud program has built with a defensive effort in the second half against William & Mary that sent the Foggy Bottom faithful home happy with a 99-86 win.

Men’s Basketball Drops Rock Fight With George Mason, 53-50

The rematch between George Washington and George Mason after last month's double-overtime contest in Fairfax resulted in every bit of the slugfest fans would expect from the nearby rivals. In a game that saw the GW Revs climb back from a 13-point hole with 10 minutes to go to take a two-point lead with 1:56 left, GW couldn't hold on as GM survived a 53-50 squeaker after a buzzer-beating 3-point try from the Buff & Blue was off.

After having a freshman campaign as strong as anyone in the conference, Darren Buchanan Jr. showed off why he was deserving of a preseason All A-10 nod going into his sophomore campaign with an all-around 19-point, 10-rebound, 3-steal effort, double-doubling with his game-high in thefts in GW men's basketball's eventual rout against Mercyhurst.

The Richmond Spiders came to D.C. Saturday looking to secure a road win in its quest to boost its NCAA Tournament resume. Tied atop the top of the conference with Dayton and Loyola Chicago with just two conference loses, the Spiders had to battle to thwart GW's second half comeback attempt in a 90-74 decision for the visitors.

Men’s Basketball Battles but Is Beaten by Loyola Chicago, 81-73

In Loyola Chicago's first-ever visit to D.C. as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, GW had the storied program down 66-59 with just over five minutes to play. The Ramblers didn't panic though, with George Washington starters Babatunde Akingbola and Darren Buchanan out for the stretch run, and closed the game on a 22-7 run to steal the win, 81-73.

To the contrary, it was Duquesne who had all of the juice as the Dukes left D.C. with a 93-67 win.

It was a showdown of two of the top candidates for Atlantic 10 Player-of-the-Year on Saturday in a matinee tip in D.C., as the league's top-scoring player in GW's James Bishop IV hosted Dayton's DaRon Holmes II in a nationally-televised affair, and backed by a bevy of buckets from his backcourt buddies, Brendan Adams and Maximus Edwards, Bishop was king of the conference in GW's thorough 76-69 win.

Bishop goes for 21, ties career-best with nine helpers

That's how the official ledger will begin in the history books when Chris Caputo's all-time record as a Head Coach is listed. GW students emptied the residence halls and poured into the Charles E. Smith Center in Foggy Bottom on Monday night as the 2022-23 college hoops season began in earnest. It was the dawn of the Caputo era at GW and the massive student turnout did not leave disappointed. In a wire-to-wire win against visiting Virginia State, Caputo guided his charges and new-look Buff and Blue club to a runaway home win.

If the unofficial start to the Chris Caputo era for GW men's basketball is any indication, the Buff and Blue can pack some offensive punch. Making the start in their first game experience on the Charles E. Smith Center floor, transfer students Max Edwards and EJ Clark found the iron kind in the cozy venue, as the pair connected on a combined 5-of-9 shooting from long range to spark a GW prolific attack from the home club in the 78-61 rout.
