Men’s Basketball Drops Rock Fight With George Mason, 53-50

The rematch between George Washington and George Mason after last month's double-overtime contest in Fairfax resulted in every bit of the slugfest fans would expect from the nearby rivals. In a game that saw the GW Revs climb back from a 13-point hole with 10 minutes to go to take a two-point lead with 1:56 left, GW couldn't hold on as GM survived a 53-50 squeaker after a buzzer-beating 3-point try from the Buff & Blue was off.

Neither squad had anything going in the first half, throwing rocks at each other to the tune of a 19-13 score at intermission. After both clubs shot below 27% in the first, the action heated up in the second with the combatants each hitting north of 47%.

First-year Christian Jones tied for a game-high 17 points while picking three steals on the other end, but ultimately free throws undid George Washington in the tight affair after leaving six points at the line in the 9-of-15 effort (.600).

Rafael Castro (#30) led all players with 10 rebounds

Rafael Castro was also all over the floor once again, double-doubling with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while tying for game-high honors with four assists and two blocks, as George Washington topped the bigger Patriots inside, outdoing the rival guests 32-18 in points in the paint.

Trey Autry (#0) added 11 points & 8 boards

With eight games remaining in the regular season, GW looks to pick up a key road win at St. Bonaventure on Sunday, with tip-time coming at the Reilly Center at noon on USA Network.
