Volleyball Outlasts Georgetown, 3-1

GW volleyball earned a 3-1 victory over crosstown rival Georgetown on Saturday in the final match of the DC Showdown. GW earned its second victory of 2023, 25-17, 25-22, 10-25, 25-14.

BY THE NUMBERS
Grace Wiczek paced the GW attack with 11 kills and Brittany Myers added nine. MC Daubendiek and Liv Womble added eight apiece to a GW offense that put down 45 kills with a .244 hitting percentage. Dilara Elmacioglu and Maeve Loughran each tallied 14 assists and Elmacioglu recorded four service aces.

Defensively, Sydney Stewart made seven blocks at the net. Penelope Hipler tallied 16 digs to lead GW's backline.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GW's .379% hitting led to a set one victory behind 13 kills, with the offense starting early for the Buff & Blue, who jumped to a 9-4 advantage. Never surrendering the set one lead, GW closed the set on a 4-1 run with a pair of kills, an ace and a Hoyas' error. 

Dilara Elmacioglu (#7) led GW with 4 service aces

It was Georgetown who sketched an early set two lead at 8-4, pushing the advantage to 14-9 before an 8-1 scoring run for the home team gave GW control at 18-16. Followed by a six-point scoring run, GW had four chances to close set two, allowing Georgetown to reach 22 points before an error from the visitors helped the Buff & Blue to the 2-0 set advantage. 

Team-high 14 assists for Maeve Loughran

Despite only being out-hit 11-7 in set three, the Hoyas' .323 hitting percentage to GW's .056 was the difference, with the Hoyas forcing a fourth set with a 25-10 victory. 

Wonder Twin powers, activate! Liv Womble (#10) & Sydney Stewart (#2)

Momentum shifted in favor of the Revolutionaries in set four, with the home team putting down 15 kills to their opponent's seven to earn a second-straight win. 

Penelope Hiepler paced GW with 16 digs
