For four decades, Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley, known as The Righteous Brothers, enchanted audiences with soulful hits like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” and “Unchained Melody.” Following Hatfield's passing in 2003, Medley pursued a solo career before teaming up with acclaimed vocalist Bucky Heard to revive The Righteous Brothers' iconic repertoire. Their Lovin’ Feelin’ Farewell Tour offers a nostalgic journey through six decades of timeless hits, spanning the early days of rock ‘n’ roll, the Blue-Eyed Soul era, and the group’s movie soundtrack successes.

National Philharmonic Celebrates the Kick Off of Its 2019-20 Season

From our friends at the National Philharmonic...

National Philharmonic Celebrates the Kick Off of Its 2019-20 Season with Grammy-Nominated Eroica Trio Performing Beethoven Classics on the Eve of His 250th Birthday, September 21-22

The National Philharmonic nearly didn’t have a 2019-20 season after its closure, due to financial difficulties was announced earlier this summer. Now, however, thanks to the support of its fans, the National Philharmonic is set to debut in September with the first concert of a full season of 11 performances. The 2019-20 season kicks off with a tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven on the eve of his 250th birthday with the Grammy-nominated Eroica Trio in “Eroica and Beethoven” on Saturday, September 21, at 8 PM and Sunday, September 22, at 3 PM at The Music Center at Strathmore. The Eroica Trio will join Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski and the National Philharmonic in performing Beethoven’s unique Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano in C Major, Op. 56 (Triple Concerto.) Triple Concerto is a hybrid of two well-established classical genres: chamber music and orchestral music. It is the only concerto Beethoven ever wrote for a trio. After intermission, Gajewski will lead the National Philharmonic in Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 55 (Eroica), one of Beethoven’s most celebrated works and one of the most majestic pieces in the symphonic repertoire. There will be a members-only encore question-and-answer after the concerts on Saturday and Sunday, and a Meet the Musicians (Instrument Petting Zoo) for young concert-goers and their families on Sunday from 2-2:30 PM. Ticket prices are $29-$79, and young people 7-17 are free. Strathmore is located at 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda. World, DC-Area Premieres Abound in Strathmore’s January & February 2019 Chamber Music Concerts

From our friends at Strathmore...

January & February Performances in the Mansion at Strathmore

Pianist Yael Weiss unveils new 32 Bright Clouds project with five world premieres;
DC-area premieres by Tessa Lark, Verona Quartet

The new year brings new music to the Mansion at Strathmore, with seven World and DC-area premieres in its January and February Music in the Mansion concerts. Pianist Yael Weiss unveils her 32 Bright Clouds project, an expression of unity and peace during turbulent times that pairs the 32 Beethoven piano sonatas with 32 newly-commissioned short piano compositions from 32 composers in 32 different countries spanning the globe. This first installment of the project features five world premieres by composers from Iran, Syria, Jordan, Ghana, and the Philippines. Tessa Lark’s technical precision and sensitive interpretation has made her a budding star in classical music, whose Kentucky roots keep her returning to bluegrass and the music of Appalachia. Her performance juxtaposes the DC-area premiere of Michael Thurber’s Violin Sonata, written specifically for Lark, with pieces by John Corigliano, Beethoven, and Stravinsky - an illustration of her ability to oscillate between the classical canon and contemporary multi-genre works. Four instrumental voices melt into an organic whole when Verona Quartet performs the DC-area premiere of composer Michael Gilbertson’s Quartet, which Verona co-commissioned, alongside works by Czech composer Leoš Janáček and Mozart. Notably, Quartet was a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist, with the honor ultimately going to rapper Kendrick Lamar.

October 2018 Concerts at AMP

AMP in October - Friends! musical parody, Netflix alum Myq Kaplan, guitarist Raul Midón & more

A fall chill might be sweeping into the air (Right? It will be cool by then... right?!), but the lively, nostalgic concerts at AMP will help keep seasonal blues away. DC’s Julia Nixon celebrates the classic songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, backed by The Dave Ylvisaker Eleven. Grammy-nominated guitarist Raul Midón seamlessly blends flamenco and jazz in an impressive show of virtuosic ability. William “Smooth” Wardlaw remembers Luther Vandross, bringing his idol’s hits to life in the tribute Luther Re-Lives with uncannily familiar appearance, laugh, and vocals. Anyone who ran out to get “The Rachel” haircut won’t want to miss the uncensored, fast-paced, music-filled show Friends! The Musical Parody, reliving favorite moments from the hit TV show. Last Comic Standing finalist Myq Kaplan brings an idiosyncratic questioning of the world to his standup, jumping from the odd spelling of his name to the infinite expanse of space to pasta, in one breath - and the formula works, having landed Kaplan his own Netflix and Comedy Central Presents specials. The Four Bitchin’ Babes round out the month, celebrating the best of babes, boys, and Botox with their whimsical songs and unbridled comedic commentary on everyday life from a female perspective.

September 2018 Concerts at AMP

AMP in September: jazzman Charlie Sepulveda; singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff; Cowboy Mouth & more

Summer might be drawing to a close, but the good times continue to roll at AMP with lively, soulful performances. World-class Latin jazz performer Charlie Sepulveda blends the influences of mentors Eddie Palmieri, Dizzy Gillespie, and Wynton Marsalis with his band, The Turnaround. Karla Bonoff, who has written songs for Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, proves she is as adept with a mic as she is with a pen as she takes the stage to peruse her singer-songwriter catalog. Washington, DC’s Let it Flow combines jazz, neo-soul, and modern hip hop in a captivating take on contemporary R&B. A decided break from the month's chill vibes, Cowboy Mouth shakes things up with their distinct New Orleans roots-rock sound. Comedians Bengt Washburn and Robert Baril hilariously take on the education system, children, and other popular issues of the day. Brooklyn-based Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights celebrate subjects such as equality and healthy eating in their carefree ballads in one of AMP’s family-friendly Kids Pajama Jam early concerts.

Strathmore Presents "Weird Al" Yankovic

The ridiculously self-indulgent, ill-advised vanity tour

After his Mandatory World Tour - 200 dates at massive venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Radio City Music Hall - the comic icon wanted to break from the high-octane theatrics he’s known for, opting for a more relaxed show that highlights his band of three decades and the music they’ve loved creating together. “A little musical palate cleanser,” in his words. Drawing from a catalogue of 14 studio albums, Yankovic promises to deliver a different set list every night that will feature the deep cuts and obscure tracks that have so endeared his fans. Opening the show is Yankovic’s longtime friend, Emo Philips. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call (301) 581-5100 or visit www.strathmore.org.
