Alcatraz East Crime Museum to Open New Lobby Exhibit: The Road to Ruin: O.J. Simpson

A new temporary exhibit will be added to spotlight the 30th anniversary of the infamous trial

To spotlight the anniversary of one of the most infamous trials in U.S. history, Alcatraz East Crime Museum is opening a new temporary exhibit titled The Road to Ruin: O.J. Simpson. The exhibit will open October 3, 2025, and run through December 2025, featuring a variety of artifacts related to the trial. There are additional highlights for the month, including refreshing the Ted Bundy exhibit, Homeschool Days, and the teacher open house.

The National Philharmonic 2019-20 concert season takes a walk down memory lane with “Arrival from Sweden: The Music of ABBA” on Saturday, November 2, at 8 PM at The Music Center at Strathmore. The number one ABBA tribute band in the world, Arrival from Sweden will join Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski and the National Philharmonic for this electrifying blast from the past, as concertgoers relive the music from the movie Mamma Mia! ARRIVAL will perform some of ABBA’s greatest hits, including Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Take a Chance, Waterloo, Fernando, and more. The original ABBA is one of the most successful pop acts of all time, and is the second-best selling band behind only the Beatles. In fact, Universal Music certified in 2010 that ABBA has sold more than 375 million records and still sells about 5 million each year. Arrival from Sweden was founded by Vicky Zetterberg in 1995 in Gothenburg, Sweden, and very soon became one of the world’s most popular and best-selling ABBA tribute bands. Since 1995, Arrival has toured in 60 countries, and their show, “The Music of ABBA” has sold out arenas and venues all over the world. Audience members are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite ABBA costumes. The Philharmonic’s Color the Music Exhibit will showcase artwork created by young people and displayed in the Strathmore lobby throughout the concert weekend. New Exhibition Incorporates Work of Photographer Amy Davis to Document Baltimore’s Movie Theaters from 1896 to the Present

On November 17, the National Building Museum opens Flickering Treasures: Rediscovering Baltimore’s Forgotten Movie Theaters. Since the arrival of its first nickelodeon, the Maryland city has been home to more than 240 movie theaters. Today, many of these buildings survive but only a handful still function as theaters. This new exhibition uses photography, architectural fragments, theater ephemera, and personal stories to explore national trends in theater design and movie-going, illuminating themes of memory, loss, and preservation. Flickering Treasures is open through October 14, 2019.

The images from that hunt went viral and although the dentist’s actions were not deemed illegal, the event sparked a worldwide outcry and raised awareness about the plight of wildlife, including lions, tigers, and elephants. The “Innovations in Flight” family day and outdoor aviation display, held annually at the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, will feature tethered hot air balloon flights this year. In honor of the U.S. Coast Guard’s 100th anniversary, a variety of Coast Guard aircraft will join more than 50 military, recreational and home-built aircraft and classic automobiles. “Innovations in Flight” will take place Saturday, June 18, from 10 AM to 3 PM.

The Decatur House will showcase a new exhibition titled The President’s Neighborhood, just steps from the award-winning Hay-Adams hotel which is offering a special package

Opening Thursday, May 5, 2016, the White House Historical Association is mounting a new exhibition at their historic Decatur House, The President’s Neighborhood, relating the story of a pivotal historic preservation success in the heart of the nation’s capital. The landmarks featured in the exhibition, as part of a historic survey, will include The White House, Blair House, The President’s Guest House, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Decatur House, Cutts-Madison House, U.S. Department of Treasury, Eisenhower Executive Office Building and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In addition to these key sites, other influential buildings around Lafayette Square, like The Hay-Adams, will be interpreted within the exhibition. Artifacts, imagery, and primary sources will engage visitors in the history of the White House and the evolution of the president’s neighborhood. Exhibit hours are Monday - Saturday 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and will be on display through Friday, September 2, 2016 (Note: closing date may be extended.) The exhibit is free of charge to the public.

New Exhibition Reveals Moon Is a Dynamic Place

The National Air and Space Museum will open its newest exhibition, “A New Moon Rises: New Views from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera,” February 26, displaying dramatic landscapes of the moon captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). The images showcase everything from Apollo landing sites to majestic mountains that rise out of the darkness of the lunar poles. The exhibition will be open through December at the museum in Washington, DC.

Sally Ride’s Possessions and Papers Shed Light on Her Public and Private Life

The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum has acquired a significant collection of personal possessions and papers that belonged to Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. The Sally K. Ride Collection illuminates Ride as both a public figure and a private person with items spanning from early childhood to her career at NASA and onward to head Sally Ride Science. A selection of these artifacts will go on display in the new Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall in July 2016.
