Daily Provisions Twitter/X Food Review

Half-Smoked, Egg & Potatoes sandwich at Daily Provisions

Save the Day

First bites at @dailyprov, and so far, so (really) good. Clean, open retail space with covered patio & a very unique (& tasty) Half-Smoked, Egg & Potatoes Sammy ($9.95) on a soft/yummy Portuguese poppy seed roll. Lots of textures & we especially love the 2 mini potatoes 🥔 (nice & flaky.) B+ #BigFansAlready Even tastier? Their crispy Cinnamon Cruller, which somehow manages to live up to its $$$ cost ($4.95 & relatively small.) Can’t recall a better cruller in all my travels. A- Daily Provisions = strong 💪 possibilities.

Overall Grade: A-

Hank's Oyster Bar Twitter/X Food Review

Oysters Anyone?

Sundays are (usually) meant for rest, but Talia’s in town, so we went to @TheWharfDC. It was hot 🥵 as Hades, and we popped into Hank’s Oyster Bar for a late lunch. Cue culinary joy! $10 Hushpuppies (5-count) to start… hot, creamy (real corn kernels) and scrumptious with a cayenne remoulade sauce for dipping. A+ followed by a smart-looking $20 Shrimp Po’boy with Old Bay Fries & Cole Slaw. Great toasted roll with 8 zesty 🍤, lettuce, tomato & more of the aforementioned remoulade (I wanted even more.) OK Slaw with a bit too much mayo, yet not enough 🥕.  Fries were twice-fried, crispy and sufficiently spicy (Talia loved ‘em!) Overall, a great Po’boy and an even better lunch experience. Attentive, fast & friendly service, but noisy (and warm) inside.

Grade: B+ (P.S. Make sure to sign up for their free loyalty program.)

Fresh Baguette Twitter/X Food Review

Fresh Baguette's Petit Sunny Side Up Bacon Cro'gel

You can always count on great customer service at #FreshBaguette but I’m struggling to find much to sing about (the food.) Petit Sunny Side Up Bacon 🥓 Cro’gel ($6.15) is messy & moist, but bacon is measly & cro’gel… unremarkable. C- Raspberry Croissant ($5.85) looks good, but filling corner takes the cake. Spread it (equally) throughout and it would be a home run. As is, a B- with potential for more.

Grade: C (They're usually better.)

1st time at Mikey & Mel’s Deli, and I’m already a huge fan! 8 oz Hot Pastrami Sandwich on toasted rye ($18.95) is scrumptious, zesty, but surprisingly not over-salted A-, with creamy Cole Slaw B and a humongous side of uniquely dirty Fries that could feed 3! for only $3.95 B plus a FREE Pickle bar A++ Bright & cheerful interior with classic rock 🎸 mix of Boston, David Bowie & Rocky Burnette. 

Grade: B+ (this close to an A-)

My brother insisted on @NannyOBriens for lunch. Good call Bro! First time trying their Onion 🧅 Rings. B+, crispy & hot. Nanny’s Fried Cod Sandwich ($16 with Rings) is solid but not spectacular. Fleshy cod, but the batter was overdone and the filet… on the small side. P.S. Wish the potato bun had been toasted. B-

Jersey Mike's Still Coming... but It Might Take a While

When news arrived of Jersey Mike's Subs opening across the street from the National Zoo, yours truly almost had a heart attack. Steak sandwiches seven days a week, less than two blocks from home? Sold! A coming soon banner confirmed the rumors (in addition to a mention on Jersey Mike's website) but once future neighbor Falafel Inc. opened next door, the banner disappeared. Fear not, sub fans. Jersey Mike's is still coming, but judging by the photo below, it might take a while. The former longtime home to Cathedral Pharmacy has been (literally) dug up inside, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're opening before Christmas. In the meantime, the aforementioned Falafel Inc. is fantastic (and cheap!) We'll keep you posted.

During the month of July, Olivia, Knightsbridge Restaurant Group’s charming and rustic Mediterranean eatery located in the heart of the Penn Quarter at 800 F Street, NW, plans to keep it cool as the weather heats up quickly. Pitchers of Sangria are on the menu for the entire month, and guests can look forward to both Red and White varieties, made with seasonal fresh fruits, juices and wines, served over ice. Each pitcher serves up to four guests and is priced at $30, excluding tax and gratuity. Chef Matt Kuhn following suit with summertime “pintxos” to pair perfectly with the refreshing sangria. Standouts include Grilled Halloumi with zhug and Shishito; Jamón with manchego and quince jam, and Crispy Boquerón with piquillo and quail egg all served on a semolina baguette. The pintxos are priced at $4 each.

Yesterday's late lunch at Roy Rogers was this close to perfect, save for an irksome issue with Roy's free Wi-Fi, which requires a third-party sign-up and verification that didn't come until after I left the restaurant. Tech glitches aside, Roy's retains its lofty status as our choice for Best Fast Food, an honor it's held for over four years running, based on delicious burgers/sandwiches, top notch sides and an easy-going style that says, "Sit down and stay awhile."

Bibiana Osteria-Enoteca, Ashok Bajaj’s authentic Italian gem, is pleased to announce the addition of a new fixed price menu, available exclusively at their 12-seat bar located at 1100 New York Ave, NW, (entrance on 12th and H Streets), in the heart of downtown Washington. Created by Executive Chef Loris Navone, the new Pranzo al Bar menu allows guests to select one featured pizza, sandwich or bowl filled with a tempting Italian meal. Bar patrons can add a choice of a soft drink, iced tea, or featured glass of Italian wine to their meal followed by a choice of coffee, espresso or seasonal sorbet flavor of the day at the end of the meal for $20 (excluding tax and gratuity.) One hour to, one hour from. Traveling long distances to review food (even if it's delicious) isn't easy. Harder still for lunch, when time is "of the essence," and you have to rush back to work. But who said being a food critic is easy? Sometimes you have to (literally) go the extra mile, so my readers don't have to. Yesterday's first visit to Top Chef alum Katsuji Tanabe's Le Kon (in Clarendon) featured a few shining moments, but not enough to make a good, lasting impression.

Red’s Table, the waterfront, family-owned restaurant, will celebrate the return of the academic school year by offering complimentary child-friendly meals for a limited time.  From September 3-7, 2018, children 12 years of age and under eat for free with the purchase of an adult entrée (maximum three kids per parent.) Children will savor tempting dishes on the Kid’s Menu created by Executive Chef Kevin Ettenson such as Cheesy Pasta; Chicken Tenders; Grilled Cheese, Cheeseburger, as well as the Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Young, more adventurous diners will enjoy the Small Steak with French fries; Crab Cake and the Veggie Pasta, which are not included in the complimentary kid-menu promotion.
