Chipotle Removes All GMO Ingredients from Its Menu

From our friends at Chipotle Mexican Grill...

Chipotle Becomes the First National Restaurant Company to Use Only Non-GMO Ingredients

Company now shifting focus to creating an even better tortilla

Chipotle Mexican Grill has achieved its goal of moving to only non-GMO ingredients to make all of the food in its U.S. restaurants - including all of the food at its Asian restaurant concept, ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen. The company is now actively developing new recipes for its tortillas, which are the only food items on its menu that include any artificial additives. Both initiatives underscore Chipotle’s commitment to serving food made from the very best ingredients.

Burrito Battles: District Taco

Chips and Salsa

It took me more than two years to actually order food at District Taco... Two years! Each time I tried to get inside their downtown location (1309 F Street, NW) I was turned off by extra long lines. It made no difference what time I stopped by... Before noon, late in the afternoon, even later at night: Always full. I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about; and until I tried it, I never would. Thank goodness for District Taco's fourth and newest location at 1919 M Street, NW. It took a late lunch (after 4:00 PM) but I finally got in; and I'm happy to report, it was worth the wait.

Burrito Battles: Lime Fresh Mexican Grill

Monday All-Day Burrito Bundle
I'm not sure why Lime Fresh Mexican Grill set up shop literally next door to California Tortilla on busy Seventh Street across from Verizon Center; but one thing's for sure, they deserve to be there. Following in the rich tradition of Moe's Southwest Grill (boy, there's a lot of competition, isn't there?) Lime offers the Monday All-Day Burrito Bundle for the low, low price of $5.99. For a budget conscious diner, that's a mighty tempting offer... especially if your alternative is eating at Verizon.

Burrito Battles: Moe's Southwest Grill

It takes a lot to impress me, so hats off to Moe's Southwest Grill for their value-packed "Moe Monday" special. $5.99 buys you any burrito, 22 oz. soft drink and chips/salsa. Mo Money, Mo Problems? Evidently not at Moe's.

Burrito Battles: Protein Bar

You never know where the road of a food critic will take you, especially one who specializes in burgers and pizza (as if there's anything wrong with either.) So imagine my surprise when I strolled into Penn Quarter's Protein Bar this afternoon, in search of something healthy. Burritos without rice? Faux buffalo sauce? What if someone recognizes me? Will I still be allowed into Hamburger Heaven when it's time to meet my maker? Sad but true, these are just some of the things that run through my mind on a daily basis. Well, guess what? I loved it. Let the Bar-rito gods rejoice.

Burrito Battles: Qdoba Mexican Grill

Round two at Qdoba Mexican Grill was a breakfast affair, and one I'd prefer to forget. It's been six weeks since my first visit to the M Street Qdoba in Georgetown; and moving east didn't seem to help improve matters. Although clean and affordable, Qdoba's not worth waking up early for... even if 10:30 AM is your idea of early.

Burrito Battles: Baja Fresh Mexican Grill

The potential is there for something special at Baja Fresh Mexican Grill. It begins with free chips & salsa with every order. What kind of salsa is entirely up to you: Baja Fresh offers a salsa bar, with six different kinds of salsa (very cool.) After that, a lot depends on which direction you take with your entree... burritos, fajitas, tacos, perhaps a taquito? Choices abound; but burrito lovers beware, you won't be able to go along for the ride.

Burrito Battles: Boloco

If Chipotle is the unofficial king of fast food burritos, then Boloco must be the next step in the evolutionary process. Relatively new to the area (their 19th Street location opened last November) Boloco is what all burrito restaurants should aspire to become. Beautiful to look at (inside and out, A+ for design) with superlative customer service, free wi-fi, affordable prices, and great food... the only thing missing would be breakfast, my favorite meal of the day. Hang on a minute: They've got that too.

Burrito Battles: California Tortilla

I absolutely adore the Cleveland Park location of California Tortilla at 3501 Connecticut Avenue, NW. Formerly home to half of Pizzeria Uno (the other half is a tanning salon) it's easily the most comfortable place to eat anything in a otherwise quietly upscale neighborhood, void of traditional fast food offerings. They make a mean fajita, and some great speciality burritos; but today's custom order left me wanting.

Burrito Battles: Chipotle Mexican Grill

When it comes to burritos, Chipotle Mexican Grill has no equal. Founded 20 years ago, Chipotle has grown from 16 locations (all in Colorado) to almost 1500 worldwide today. Their secret? Assembly line efficiency, corporate ownership (no franchises here) and fresh ingredients. How fresh? They serve more naturally raised meat than any other restaurant in the country. That's pretty darn fresh.

Burrito Battles: Qdoba Mexican Grill

I was never what you'd call, a burrito kinda guy... at least not until I got hooked on Chipotle. That was about two years ago; and since then, I've tried 'em all. Or so I thought. Somehow, I managed to miss Qdoba Mexican Grill and all three of its DC locations. One look at the line for nearby Georgetown Cupcake, and I quickly changed my lunch plans from cupcake to burrito... in the blink of an eye. Seriously, how do you line up outside for a cupcake when it's almost 100*?
