Testament of Youth Movie Review

Alicia Vikander stars in Testament of Youth

No More Fear

IMDb Plot: A British woman (Alicia Vikander as Vera Brittain) recalls coming of age during World War I - a story of young love, the futility of war, and how to make sense of the darkest times.

I agreed to screen Testament of Youth for one reason (Alicia Vikander... I have a deep crush) but even the entrancing star of Ex-Machina can't overcome a resonating feeling of doom & gloom, given the film's physical setting (WWI.) Vera's at her best whilst chasing her dreams (Oxford) but drops everything to follow (blindly?) love, eventually making her way to the front of the war. Yikes. In between, there are good moments (Vera's chaperoned date with Kit Harington's Roland is a hoot) but mostly it's blood, sadness and lots of letters. Yawn. Romantics might love it. Me? Not so much.
