Hailing from Detroit and reigning supreme since the 1960s, Ross was among Motown’s most iconic artists, paving the future of R&B and soul. Her many accomplishments include myriad awards and accolades, including Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, a Kennedy Center Honor, her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the NAACP’s Female Entertainer of the Year award, and Billboard’s Female Entertainer of the Century award. Tickets go on sale to the general public Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at 10 AM. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (301) 581-5100 or visit www.strathmore.org.
From R&B and soul to disco and jazz, Ross’ repertoire encompasses a landscape of American popular music. As lead singer of The Supremes, she achieved an unprecedented 12 No. 1 singles in the United States, rivaled only by The Beatles. As a soloist, she achieved six No. 1 singles, and 14 Top 10 albums - selling more than 100 million units worldwide. With her 1981 hit, Endless Love, she became the first female musician to place six singles in Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
In the ‘90s, Ross collaborated with operatic giants Plácido Domingo and José Carreras in a Christmas concert that was broadcast around the world. She also celebrated her extensive career with a 30th Anniversary four-CD commemorative album, Diana Ross: The Ultimate Collection, and her long-awaited autobiography, Secrets of a Sparrow. A musical diplomat for the United States, she also traveled to Russia in 1995 for historic performances at the Kremlin in Moscow.
Ross’ contributions to the film industry have also been met with acclaim. For her portrayal of Billie Holliday in Lady Sings the Blues, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and was nominated for an Oscar in the same category. Her one-woman Broadway show, An Evening with Diana Ross, won her a Tony Award and was later broadcast as a television special. Ross recently took on producing through her own company, Anaid Productions, and works regularly for networks including ABC, CBS, HBO, and Showtime. Her production debut, Out of Darkness, portrayed the stunning story of a troubled woman’s battle with paranoia and schizophrenia.
Committed to advancing the next generation of American leaders, Ross joined the board of directors of A Better Chance, an organization through which she facilitates admission to prestigious American schools for academically talented students.
