Strathmore Presents VOCA People, November 15th

VOCA People visits Strathmore, November 15th

From our friends at Strathmore...

VOCA People Crash Land for Second Vocal Performance Extravaganza at Strathmore

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Madonna. Queen. Dolly Parton. There’s nothing, and no one, the vocally-nimble VOCA People can’t mimic with their flawlessly sung harmonies and amazing beat-box. The troupe of affable, sonically-gifted aliens descends upon the Music Center at Strathmore for a second time on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 8 p.m. Beginning as a YouTube sensation with more than 50 million hits to date, this theatrically quirky off-Broadway hit is captivating audiences around the world with its interactive, all a cappella and beat-box show - nimbly perusing the ages and genres of music as they transform more than 70 songs and compositions. No instruments, no sound effects - just eight incredible vocal talents. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (301) 581-5100 or visit www.strathmore.org.

The story goes that after a millennium of space travel, the alien VOCA People finally land on Earth, their spaceship’s engine, charged by music alone, totally depleted. Slowly, the aliens learn Earthly habits and Earth music, and with the help of a little audience participation, reboot their ship with music energy.

Israel-based VOCA People is an ensemble of eight musician-actors: three female singers (alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano) and three male singers (bass, baritone and tenor), with two extraordinary beat-box artists, who combine their talents to make an entire orchestra without musical instruments. VOCA People has been received with great adoration, with Jimmy Fallon hailing it as, “The coolest show ever!”

Of their recent performance at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in Scotland, the Edinburgh Evening News said of VOCA People: “… a capella doesn’t begin to cover it - with tremendous beat-boxing providing rhythm and momentum, it’s actually an eight-piece band where all the instruments happen to be vocals.”
