Strathmore is embarking on its summer season with the announcement of three brand new shows added to the Music Center: John Hiatt & The Combo and The Robert Cray Band; Best of Strathmore Tribute Shows produced by Bandhouse Gigs; and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Chatham County Line. Tickets for these shows go on sale today, Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 10 a.m.

Strathmore’s concert hall will also welcome the arts center’s signature Strathmore Children’s Chorus in its second annual summer concert; the Evermay Chamber ensemble in its first performance away from its home at Georgetown’s Evermay Estate; iconic singer-songwriter John Prine; and Strathmore’s annual convergence of international choral ensembles—Serenade!

Summer also includes returning community favorites such as Strathmore’s Free Summer Outdoor Concert Series and Backyard Theater for Children.

Jazz Samba Project:
Strathmore’s Jazz Samba Project is a celebration of over 50 years of bossa nova. The festival is inspired by the landmark 1962 Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd Jazz Samba album, which led to the popularization of this Brazilian sound in America. The two-week festival of more than 20 concerts, events, exhibitions, lectures and family activities coincides with the 2014 World Cup held in Brazil, which has put the country once again at the forefront of global dialogue. The Jazz Samba Project is produced by Strathmore’s Director of Programming Georgina Javor in partnership with writer, musician and jazz aficionado Ken Avis.

Jazz Samba was the first bossa nova album to experience mainstream success on the American jazz and pop scenes. Recorded at the All Souls Unitarian Church in Washington, D.C., it ended up inspiring two landmark concerts which included all the big Brazilian musicians of the time—one at Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C. and one at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The seed for Jazz Samba was planted during jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd’s 1961 State Department tour of Brazil and 17 other countries in South and Central America. Byrd and his collaborators brought home a sound that captivated Brazilians and set the stage for a new wave of music in the United States—inspiring the likes of Burt Bacharach, Elvis Presley, the Beatles and other pop icons of the 1960s, who all drew influence from the bossa nova craze.

Jazz Samba Project is made possible by a National Endowment for the Arts Art Works Grant.
