Multi-part Jazz Samba Project at Strathmore is highlight of newly announced programming

Big names in Music Center—Michael McDonald, Neil Sedaka, Newport Jazz Festival, Lily Tomlin

On Monday, September 30, 2013 Strathmore introduces more than 45 new concerts, exhibitions and special events in its 2013-2014 season of programs for the Music Center and Mansion. The most notable addition to the calendar is The Jazz Samba Project at Strathmore, a multi-part exploration of the proliferation of Brazilian bossa nova music in the United States, including concerts with Grammy Award-winner Sergio Mendes and Eliane Elias, the Ron Kearns Quartet with Michael Thomas and Veronneau, among others; an exhibition on the bossa nova movement featuring items from the Felix E. Grant archives at the University of the District of Columbia; Discover Strathmore, a free campus-wide Brazilian music and dance festival; a world premiere documentary film screening; symposia and other activities.

The Music Center sees the return of favorites Keb’ Mo’ as he releases a new album; comedic genius Lily Tomlin; and American icon Neil Sedaka, as well as ensembles Classic Albums Live and Cirque Zíva. New concerts in the Music Center include the Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60; The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra featuring New York Voices; Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín; Marcus Johnson and The Urban Jam Band; and Celtic Nights: The Emigrants Bridge. Broadway arrives at Strathmore with the cheers and basket tosses of Bring It On: The Musical.

The arts center rolls out an array of holiday programming from Michael McDonald; the Boston Brass partnering with the Strathmore Children’s Chorus in homage to Stan Kenton with other seasonal classics; country music stars Crystal Gayle and Lee Greenwood; and, returning with three concerts of holiday jazz riffs, The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra.

Strathmore’s hallmark Artists in Residence education program also introduces a whole new crop of exceptional emerging musicians, including West African Manding Diali percussionist Amadou Kouyate; old time banjo player Brad Kolodner; jazz vocalist Christie Dashiell; saxophonist and Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra frontman Elijah Jamal Balbed; Hindustani violinist Nistha Raj; and Russian American classical guitarist Piotr Pakhomkin, as well as their mentors, folk musician and producer Cathy Fink, bandleader and jazz trumpeter Graham Breedlove, and conductor and internationally reputed music educator Dr. James Ross.

The new AIR Alumni concert series continues to grow with performances by jazz saxophonist John Kocur, jazz vocalist Integriti Reeves, Gypsy jazz violinist Daisy Castro and local roots music hero Daryl Davis.

Tickets for all concerts will go on sale Monday, September 30, 2013 at 10 a.m. to Strathmore Stars, the art center’s philanthropic member program. Tickets will be available to the general public beginning Friday, October 11, 2013 at 10 a.m.

Radio broadcaster Felix Grant was a familiar voice to Washington, D.C. listeners for nearly 50 years. His early interest in and fascination with Brazilian culture and music played a pivotal role in introducing bossa nova to the United States. This multimedia exhibit includes photographs, concert programs and awards, as well as unique interviews of prominent artists such as João Gilberto, Leny Andrade, Sergio Mendes and Dorival Caymmi. Together they provide a glimpse into Brazilian music of this period and its explosive impact on the American jazz scene.

This concert includes the free pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m., Intro to Bossa Nova, for audience members to delve into the growth of Brazilian music from the 1960s.

Three lectures explore the migration and maturation of bossa nova in the United States. In The Jazz Samba Recording, Ken Avis will moderate a discussion on the importance of the Jazz Samba record and its subsequent impact on the U.S. music scene with Brazilian professor and musician Leonardo Lucini, jazz critic and professor David Adler and NPR’s Tom Cole. From Bossa Nova to Pop examines how bossa nova infiltrated the American pop lexicon, led by NPR’s Tom Cole. Members of the U.S. State Department talk about how influential cultural exchanges were and continue to be in spreading American music around the world and bringing foreign music back home to the United States in the final lecture, The Politics of Cross-Cultural Diplomacy in Brazil and Abroad.

This profoundly moving multimedia concert, combining the magnificent music of Verdi with video testimonials, tells the story of the courageous Jewish prisoners in the World War II Theresienstadt Concentration Camp (Terezín) who performed the famous Verdi Requiem while experiencing the depths of human degradation. With only a smuggled score, they performed the famous oratorio sixteen times, including one performance before senior SS officials from Berlin and a Red Cross delegation.
