Anatomy of a Cupcake at Something Sweet

Jetties' Vanilla Caramel Cupcake with Crushed Heath Bar

Democrat or Republican. Nationals or Orioles. Few topics evoke such heated debate in the nation's capital as the aforementioned quandaries; but mention cupcakes, and you may find yourself picking sides in one of the tastier battles of the Beltway. For the next couple of weeks, DC Outlook will take on the arduous task of selecting our favorite cupcake in the Washington area.

Our first candidate is Something Sweet/Jetties, a three-location outfit that specializes in salads, sandwiches and tasty treats (including cupcakes.) I stopped by the Macomb branch (3708 Macomb St., NW) earlier this afternoon, and purchased a vanilla caramel cupcake with crushed Heath bar. It looked delicious, and was packaged in a convenient, clear plastic container for safe traveling. The cake was average, but paled in comparison to its scrumptious icing. I'm anxious to try it again (maybe earlier in the day, just out of the oven.)

Regular cupcakes run $3, while speciality cupcakes (like the one I bought) cost a quarter more. I took mine to go, which saved eating inside Jetties' rather tight quarters. Outside seating is available, but someone... please fix that front door.
