Men's Soccer: American 1 Longwood 0

Charlie Hunter's late goal defeats Longwood

Hunter Pushes AU Past Longwood 1-0

Charlie Hunter picked a good great time to score his first-ever NCAA goal. The British-born midfielder nailed a free kick from about 20 yards out... hitting the post, but bouncing in to give the American men's soccer team a thrilling 1-0 win over Longwood at Reeves Field. Eagles' forward (and fellow freshman) Peter Behm had a free run at the goal, but was fouled... setting up Hunter's last-minute heroics.

The visiting Lancers (3-10-3) came into this contest a decided underdog, but stuck with the home team for the entire game. Despite being outshot 13-8, Longwood had a chance to score first... in the 81st minute on a shot by Sam Yardley, but AU goalkeeper Billy Knutsen made a great save (one of five for the game.) Today's shutout was Knutsen's fourth of the season.

It's official: AU wins!

The first half belonged to AU, as they outshot Longwood 8-2 and played pressure-O for the entire 45 minutes. Junior forward Colin Seigfreid was particularly effective, just missing high over the crossbar in the final seconds of the half. The second half was a real nail-biter, as both teams had their chances to take the lead. Fans (and players alike) were treated to gorgeous weather (not bad for mid-October.)

With the win, American improves to 7-5-2 overall (2-0-2 in conference play.) The Eagles host conference rival Navy on Saturday at 1:00 PM in a huge rematch from last year's Patriot League tournament semi-finals (won by AU on PKs.) It's also Phil Reeves day, and all AU students can celebrate in style with free pizza, Coca Cola and Robeks smoothies before the game. Almost makes me wish I was back in college again. Almost
