Southern inspired dishes and flavors of NOLA

Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is on March 5th, 2019. Mardi Gras, or "Fat Tuesday," is the last day of the Carnival season as it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. For those who can’t be in The Big Easy for the celebrations, a taste of NOLA is available at Union Street Public House in Old Town Alexandria.

Chef Jeremy Waybright offers a unique Cajun dish - Yakamein AKA Yock AKA Old Sober is Cajun beef broth, shaved ribeye, soy sauce, scallion, hard-boiled egg and noodles ($15) and a Fried Oyster Po Boy - local oysters, garlic butter, shredded lettuce, remoulade, fries, on a soft roll ($16.) His classic version of the Crescent City’s signature Gumbo ($21) and flavorful BBQ Shrimp ($13) with grilled bread to sop up every bit of the dish’s delicious buttery, Creole-spiced sauce is also on the menu and available daily. Match these dishes with a Sazerac from the restaurant’s Whiskey Bar featuring over 240 fine Whiskeys, or a cocktail, beer or wine from Union Street Public House’s main bar.

An alumna of restaurants such as Bryan Voltaggio’s Range, and former executive chef of Boss Shepherd’s, Chef Waybright has honed his skills in Southern inspired cuisine utilizing local ingredients.


Union Street Public House is a blend of the historic and contemporary. The Taproom and Grill Room, renovated in 1985, make up the main part of the restaurant. The Regatta Room and Whiskey Bar fill a more intimate section, housed in a building that dates to the late 1700s and was reportedly used as a meeting space by colonial merchants, including George Washington.

The restaurant is open Monday-Thursday - Lunch from 11 AM until 3:00 PM; Dinner 5-10 PM; Friday-Sunday - Lunch/Brunch from 11 AM until 3:00 PM; Dinner 5-10 PM; Late Night Menu available daily. Happy Hour in the Taproom, Monday-Friday from 3-7 PM. The Whiskey Bar opens at 5:00 PM, Wednesday through Saturday. Private parties and special events in all rooms by appointment.
