Upgrade Movie Review

Logan Marshall Green stars in Upgrade

Off Grid

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: After his wife is killed during a brutal mugging that also leaves him paralyzed, Grey Trace (Logan Marshall Green - Spider-Man: Homecoming, Prometheus) is approached by a billionaire inventor with an experimental cure that will "upgrade" his body. The cure - an Artificial Intelligence implant called STEM - gives Grey physical abilities beyond anything experienced and the ability to relentlessly claim vengeance against those who murdered his wife and left him for dead. Directed by Leigh Whannell.

Remember the U.S. Army's slogan "Be all you can be?" Whannell kicks it up a notch in Upgrade, a compelling cross between Hardcore Henry and RoboCop, with a dash of Ex Machina tossed in for good measure. It's not as good as those three, but it's creative and violent enough to keep pace. Green plays it low key, allowing STEM to do the heavy lifting, which he prefaces with a reassuring "I can do it for you: You don't even have to look." The ending's weak, and comes sooner than you think; but odds are, you'll have fun getting there.

Grade: B-
