Women's Basketball: Queens (NY) 61 UDC 60

UDC's Daeja Quick (#3) led all scorers with 17 points

The UDC Firebirds (3-18, 1-10 ECC) started the first seconds of the first quarter off strong with an early 10-2 lead. By the end of the first quarter, the Firebirds were up by eight points (18-10) setting the tempo for the game. By the end of the second quarter, the Firebirds were down, but still fighting, having scored seven points in second quarter, making it a five point game (30-25.) By the third quarter, the Firebirds were moving again, scoring 21 points and pushing the score to 46-40 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the true grit of the Firebirds showed with the women scoring 14 points to close the gap and make it a one point loss. Queens College goes on to be 9-9 overall and 5-5 in East Coast Conference.

Freshman Daeja Quick had a stellar game with 17 points, but was not the only contributor to this hard fought game. Danielle Harrington had a smooth 13 points with 3 steals, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Mia-Alexis Lloyd contributed with 12 points having 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists, and Tyra Coombs added an encouraging 9 points 3 rebounds and 1 assist.

Queens College was led by the upperclassmen in points, with Merrick Rowland (14 points) junior Marina Ramon Lopez (12 points) and junior Emer Moloney (11 points.) Also contributing to the team was Beth Bonin with 9 points and Taliyah Hopkins also with 9 points, creating a total of 18 points for the team.

The Knights and Firebirds were close in the shootout with the Knights being 42.6% (23-54) from the field, and the Firebirds being 42.1% (24-57) but ultimately the Knights won out with 44.4% (4-9) in the 3-point range game versus the Firebirds 42.9% (6-14.) The Knights dominated in rebounds with 38, while the Firebirds had 27. Although the Knights had many rebounds, they also had numerous turnovers with a total of 17 compared to the Firebirds 12 turnovers.

Next up for UDC is an ECC battle at home against Roberts Wesleyan on Friday, February 2nd.
