Second Half Push Sends Men’s Basketball to Victory, 107-97 Over NYIT

The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team won with a determined performance against East Coast Conference foe Queens College, 63-60 on Saturday afternoon at UDC Sports Complex.

The Firebirds gave themselves the upper hand in the contest leading the 1st half 30-25, and UDC (3-16, 2-9 ECC) went on to control the 2nd half as Queens looked to battle their way back into the game. Junior guard Danny Shand proved to be effective scoring a total of 16 points along with six rebounds, five assists, and four steals. The District of Columbia worked tirelessly as they continued to stop the Knights from making a comeback. UDC put their performance against Molloy behind them, and have now improved their record to 3-16, and 2-9 in conference play.

Traevon Butler (#5) scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds

In the early stages of the first half, UDC gained momentum as junior guard Kevin Cox made an important three-point shot to give the Firebirds a 13-6 lead. From this moment onwards, the Firebirds were ruthless and made it difficult for a Queens's comeback. With the score at the end of the 1st half at 30-25, the contest was tight, but the District of Columbia continued their push into the 2nd half with Danny Shand making a three-point shot to extend their lead early on. Queens College were persistent and carried on to make it a tough battle for the Firebirds. And with only about two minutes remaining on the clock the game was at a crucial point with the score at 61-60 for the Firebirds. However, senior guard Traevon Butler made a valiant attempt to reclaim the ball off a missed jump shot from Shand, and produced a vital layup to give UDC the win.

Senior Khalil Jackson (#12, 15 points) led all players with 3 blocks

A team performance which saw senior guard Khalil Jackson get 15 points, four rebounds, and three blocks, along with Butler who had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Cox helped out with eight points and eight rebounds.

Kyle Williams (#3) added 3 points & 4 rebounds off the bench

Queens College were tough opponents, and senior guard Tyrone Hall was their leading scorer with 14 points and five rebounds. Also, sophomore Forward Isaac Grant made 11 points and nine rebounds to keep the contest alive.

Freshman Paul Eromosele (#4) scored 7 points

Next, UDC will be visiting Holy Family in a regional game, Tuesday, January 30th at 7 PM.
