Strathmore Presents Artist in Residence Joey Antico

Jazz/electronica fusion drummer and opener for pop star BØRNS debuts "Cuppa"

Jazz drummer Joey Antico is undeniably on the rise - his polished playing, a fusion of jazz fundamentals and electronic influences, has caught the eye of mentors Chuck Redd (of the Charlie Byrd Trio) and Grammy winner Chris Vadala, as well as pop singer-songwriter BØRNS, for whom Antico opened as part of the duo Todo Mas. The Strathmore Artist in Residence performs in the Mansion on February 8 & 22, 2017 at 7:30 PM, where he’ll premiere the Strathmore-commissioned work, “Cuppa,” in honor of his grandfather. His performances are sponsored by Tanya and Stephen Spano. For more information, please call (301) 581-5100 or visit www.strathmore.org.

Originally from Chicago, Antico grew up in Maryland and currently attends the University of Maryland, College Park pursuing Bachelor of Music degrees in Jazz Performance and Music Education. In addition to BØRNS, Antico has had the opportunity of sharing the stage with indie singer-songwriter Mitski, alternative world music group VAS, and alt rock band Tesla Rossa - indicative of his musical versatility. In addition to live performances, Antico works as a studio musician and is a collaborator in electronic duo Todo Mas, which released its first EP, Good Night and Joy Be with You, in December 2015. Antico can also be found on albums by Otis Infrastructure and Chris Urquiaga among others.

Antico was also the recipient of the Steve Marcus Jazz Scholarship and was awarded a position in the 2017 Mid Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra under direction of Delfeayo Marsalis - two more testaments to his promising talent.

About the Strathmore Artist in Residence Program:
Founded in 2005, the Strathmore Artist in Residence program was created to support the transition from amateur performer to career artist. The program has mentored more than 60 young musicians, ages 16-32. Each year through a competitive selection process, a class of six is chosen and benefits greatly from the support of participating mentors and musicians, 30 hours of professional development seminars, and extensive performance opportunities offered throughout the 10-month program. The Artist in Residence program is part of Strathmore’s Institute for Artistic and Professional Development.

About Strathmore:
