GW Men’s Basketball Concludes Japan Tour with 82-58 Rout of Ryukyu Kings

Watanabe, Hart score 15 apiece, as GW finishes trip 4-0

The GW men’s basketball team wrapped up its tour of Japan with an 82-58 rout of the Ryukyu Golden Kings Sunday afternoon at the Okinawa City Gymnasium.

For the second straight game, Yuta Watanabe starred in front of his home fans while Tyler Cavanaugh had another 20-point effort as GW men's basketball team defeated the Japanese National Team 77-71 on Tuesday at Ryƍgoku Kokugikan.

Yuta Watanabe and Matt Hart scored 15 apiece for the Colonials, who went a perfect 4-0 on the tour with three wins over the Japan National Team. Patrick Steeves added 10 points, and for the second straight game 11 Colonials found the scoring column in a balanced victory.

The Colonials built a double-digit advantage by halftime, leading 39-27 at the break after Watanabe scored in transition and Jordan Roland completed a steal and score just before the second quarter buzzer.

GW, which won its four games in Japan by an average margin of 18.3 points, had no trouble cruising to the victory. Roland and Kevin Marfo (both in starting roles) had eight points apiece, while Arnaldo Toro came off the bench to add seven. Marfo also added seven boards, and GW maintained its double-digit advantage throughout the second half.

Tyler Cavanaugh grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with seven points, and the Colonials hit 40 percent from three-point range (6-15) a game after connecting at a .429 (9-21) clip. Hart accounted for half of the triples with a 3-for-4 night.

Meanwhile, Watanabe closed an impressive tour that saw him average 14.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in front of his home fans.
