The Finest Hours Movie Review

Casey Affleck stars in The Finest Hours

Over Under the Bar

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias' book detailing a daring 1952 Coast Guard rescue off the New England seaboard comes to the screen in this Disney film produced by Jim Whitaker (Take Me Home Tonight, The Odd Life of Timothy Green.) Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson team to pen the screenplay. Stars Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Holliday Grainger & Eric Bana. Directed by Craig Gillespie.

The Finest Hours starts off with good intentions (charming romance) but once it gets in the water... disaster strikes. Not the real life catastrophe it's based on, mind you; but rather a watered-down (pun intended) drama that's hard to see, and even harder to sit through. Bernie (Pine) confesses, "I don't want to disappoint nobody," and he doesn't, delivering a refreshingly nonabrasive performance. Unfortunately, Gillespie fails to inject authenticity (many characters don't even get wet) or thrills... unless you count, "I lost my hat!" Not exactly Titanic, is it? "Brace yourselves!" For what? Your guess is as good as mine.
