Strathmore Presents Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs

‘Bawdy countercultural sprite’ feels things, sings about them in Valentine’s Day cabaret

Schmaltzy. Bitter. Corny. Vindictive. Moonstruck. Tempestuous. Alan Cumming takes doe-eyed lovers on a fantastical arc from the throes of love to unrequited desire in a Valentine’s Day cabaret dripping with feelings in Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at 8 PM in the Music Center at Strathmore. The eclectic Tony winner, best known for his star turns as the Emcee in the Broadway revival of Cabaret and Eli Gold on the hit series The Good Wife, traverses songs from the likes of Annie Lennox, Elaine Stritch, Adele, Keane, and Rufus Wainwright “with tremendous theatrical authority” (The New York Times.) The evening of song and comical banter is backed by his Emmy-winning Musical Director Lance Horne and cellist Eleanor Norton. Alan Cumming is an actor and activist, identified by The New York Times as, “a bawdy countercultural sprite.” Time named him one of the most fun people in show business. Cumming’s diverse career has found him performing at venues around the globe, including the Sydney Opera House; making back-to-back films with Stanley Kubrick and The Spice Girls; directing and starring in a musical condom commercial; creating voices of a Smurf, a goat, and Hitler; entering upside down and suspended by his ankles in a Greek tragedy (in the National Theatre of Scotland’s The Bacchae); and recording an award-winning album of songs (plus a dance remix.)

Cumming is also host of PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery and appears opposite Lisa Kudrow in Showtime’s Web Therapy. Cumming has written for The New York Times, Newsweek, Harper’s Bazaar, Out, has a bi-monthly column for Globe and Mail, and two books: Tommy’s Tale and The New York Times bestselling memoir, Not My Father’s Son.

A tireless champion for LGBT civil rights and the fight against HIV/AIDS, Cumming serves on the Board of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and works closely with amfAR, The Trevor Project, and the Ali Forney Center. In 2009, Cumming was made an OBE in the Queen’s Honors List and by his homeland, Scotland, for which he was a vocal supporter of the YES for Independence campaign. Cumming has been awarded the Great Scot and Icon of Scotland awards, and recently had his portrait unveiled at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
