Secret in Their Eyes Movie Review

Chiwetel Ejiofor & Julia Roberts (r) star in Secret in Their Eyes

Welcome to the (Dull) War

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: A tight-knit team of rising investigators - Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts), along with their supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman) is suddenly torn apart when they discover that Jess's teenage daughter has been brutally and inexplicably murdered. Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he's certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team. No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul.

Ray sums up Secret in Their Eyes with eight words (directed at Jess) "I think you look a million years old." Like it or not, Roberts' appearance takes center stage against a dreary storyline you've probably seen (or read) a hundred times before. Ejiofor is solid (again) but Roberts & fellow Oscar winner Kidman are downright bad/forgettable. Ray gushes, "I'm looking at royalty here," but truth be told, he needs to have his eyes examined. Ditto for screenwriter director Billy Ray, who does a piss-poor job jumping back and forth across 13 seemingly indistinguishable years. See the original instead.
