Clarendon Ice Cream Shop Proves They're Here to Stay with Their Second Title of Best Ice Cream at DC Scoop
DC Scoop judges announced on Saturday at Union Market that Nicecream Factory, a local Clarendon ice cream shop, would take home their second consecutive win. The team, led by a DC-based entrepreneurial couple Sandra Tran and Gilbert Welsford, now sports “Best Ice Cream 2015” on a shiny gold trophy in their storefront.
Their store in the Market Common Clarendon whips up made-to-order ice cream every day in Kitchen Aid mixers using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and their freezing agent liquid nitrogen. The shop makes over 60 flavors, which rotate weekly. The winning flavors at DC Scoop include Pistachio, Bananas and Cream, and Vanilla Bean Nicecream. Each flavor starts with a local, grass-fed base of milk, cream, and sugar. Pistachio Nicecream, which also brought home the win at DC Scoop 2014, is made with a house-made pistachio butter.
“It’s amazing winning DC Scoop for a second time. Many people are attracted to the liquid nitrogen and watching how we make the ice cream, but we also want people to know what goes into the ice cream and why it tastes so good. We’re really excited that everyone at DC Scoop was able to experience the process and taste it as well,” co-owner Tran explains.
Founded in Spring 2013, Nicecream Factory has been an active participant of the local farmer’s markets community and serves every Saturday this summer at the Arlington Courthouse farmer’s market. In addition, the company has established a loyal following from a series of pop up shop appearances and at their store and continues to cater corporate and social events, including an A-list celebrity wedding.
Both recent graduates of James Madison University’s College of Business, Tran and Welsford intend to expand to even more neighborhoods in the DC metro area.
The Nicecream Factory ice cream shop is located at 2831 Clarendon Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22201.
