Hoyas Come Up Short Against Xavier
Georgetown will host Butler on Sunday
The Georgetown University women's basketball squad (4-21, 2-11 BIG EAST) had chances, but couldn't find the answer late falling to the Xavier University Musketeers (15-10, 7-7 BIG EAST), 60-55, Friday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena.
"I was happy with our defense until the last minute and 14 seconds," said head coach Natasha Adair. "You've got to play until the final buzzer and we didn't do that tonight, we left a minute and 14 on the table, but on Sunday we'll fight to finish. That's the expectation."

Junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) led the way with 17 points including a 3-of-6 performance from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshman center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) was huge on the boards with 12 caroms, including seven on the offensive glass.

The Hoyas outrebounded the Musketeers, 42-41, and forced 18 turnovers while committing 17, but shot 32.3 percent from the field (23-of-65). The difference came in the final minutes as the Blue & Gray couldn't corral a board to stop second-chance opportunities from Xavier.

Adomako scored first and despite the Musketeers coming at them, Georgetown managed to build a small lead. The Hoyas forced turnovers and went up by as much as five, 15-10, nine minutes in. Xavier scored to cut it to five again at 8:18, but the Blue & Gray staged a 6-0 run to move ahead by 11, 25-14, with 5:25 remaining in the half.

The Musketeers quickly regrouped and put together an 11-0 run to tie it back up at 25 with three minutes left, but GU closed out the first half strong. Adomako hit a layup and Belk added a free throw. A late charity shot from XU made it 28-26 at the break in favor of the Blue & Gray.

Georgetown was outrebounded in the first and shot just 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from the field, but had just six turnovers and forced 11 by Xavier to manage a small lead.
After a one-possession game, the Musketeers tied it at 34 early in the second. A 3-pointer a minute later gave XU the lead, and the squad went up by as much as eight.

A 3-pointer from Horne out of a GU timeout cut it back to five, but the Blue & Gray had an uphill battle. As the squad battled, Horne hit another 3-pointer to cut the lead to three. Back-to-back turnovers gave the Hoyas an opportunity and Horne answered with another trey to tie it at 47.

Xavier would score and Georgetown would tie it as both Adomako and Horne both hit shots to even the deficit. Belk's jumper from the free throw line put the Blue & Gray up by two, 53-51, with five minutes remaining as the game would go down to the wire.

With the score tied at 53, freshman point guard Justyce Swango (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) hit a jumper to take a lead, but once again the Musketeers had an answer with a 3-on-2 fast break layup.

As the teams stayed tied, both had opportunities, but Xavier took advantage hitting a free throw to make it 56-55 with under two minutes to play. The Hoyas had a look at the basket, but couldn't connect and on the other end, second-chance points allowed a Musketeer layup making the score 58-55 with 31 seconds left.

Adair called a timeout and drew up a play, but the three clanged off the rim and despite an offensive rebound, the Hoyas couldn't get another shot off.
GU was forced to foul and the Musketeers made both to make it a five-point game, 60-55, which would be the final.
Georgetown will conclude its homestand on Sunday as the team hosts Butler University on Sunday. Sunday's game is scheduled to tip at 4 p.m., and will be GU's annual Alumni Day as well as part of the nation-wide Play4Kay event with teams wearing pink to support cancer research.
