Strathmore Presents Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra

Spirit of Mardi Gras lives on past Fat Tuesday with exuberant musical tribute to Crescent City

The sound of horns, piano, bass, and drums will reverberate through the Music Center at Strathmore when Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO) perform the unrestrained, sizzling music of its namesake city with all the energy of a Mardi Gras celebration on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 8 p.m. Mardi Gras lives on with complimentary beads for concert attendees and New Orleans-inspired food and drink. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (301) 581-5100 or visit www.strathmore.org

Described as a “savory dish of musical gumbo” (Deseret News), the Grammy-winning, 18-piece NOJO is the foremost New Orleans-based jazz preservation ensemble working today. With Mayfield, they deliver a soulful and swinging testimony to that great city’s rich musical heritage and thriving present. They are also intimately and inextricably connected to the rebirth of the Crescent City itself, revitalizing its jazz scene. Mayfield’s “clarion intonation and relaxed power” (New York Times) is the rallying cry for their roiling, free-playing performances, mixing original compositions and old favorites. An ambassador for his hometown as well as an esteemed bandleader, Mayfield has been a driving force in New Orleans’ cultural renewal in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and champion of the unique musical experience that could have only originated in the birthplace of jazz.
