Men's Basketball: Virginia State 80 UDC 64

UDC Drops 80-64 Decision vs. Virginia State

Senior guards Michael Terry and Quasim Jones each scored season-highs of 13 and 14 points, respectively, but the UDC Firebirds were defeated, 80-64 by Virginia State on Tuesday night in the nation's capital.

UDC fell to 0-5 on the season while Virginia State, of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) improved to 3-2 overall.

Virginia State shot a blistering 59-percent from the field compared to UDC's 36-percent  and out-scored the Firebirds 34-24 in the paint. The Trojans featured four double-figure scorers, including a game-high 19 points by Troy Locke, who shot 7-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point range. Center Tyrece Little also registered 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with a team-high nine rebounds.

Nobody hustles like Clenso Brannon III (9 rebounds)

The Firebirds had the hot hand early, making their first three, three-point attempts to grab an early, 13-10 lead near the 13-minute mark. Later, freshman guard Kory Kooley's (Art - Silver Spring, MD/Calvin Coolidge HS) layup helped UDC to a 21-19 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the first half, but a 10-0 VSU surge helped the Trojans pull in front, 29-21 on a Locke three-pointer at the 5:13 mark. Locke was 5-for-5 (2-of-2 from long range) with 12 points in the first half as he led Virginia State to a 37-27 halftime lead.

VSU led 42-31 in the second half despite three consecutive made free-throws by sophomore guard Reggie Sidbury (Social Work - Landover, MD/Charles Herbert Flowers HS) at the 18:22 mark, and the Trojans put the game out of reach with a 13-0 run to go up 55-31. Virginia State would expand its lead to as many as 26 near the seven-minute mark and cruise to a 16-point victory.

Next up, UDC will travel to Philadelphia to take on Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, November 29th at 2 p.m.
