Grilled New York Strip Steak |
It's hard to believe I hadn't ordered a steak out, in over a year. Evidently, some things are worth waiting for. Which I why I couldn't resist the Grilled New York Strip Steak at Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club last night before the Celtic Tenors concert. At $31, it's a bit of a luxury; but after two bites, I was swooning. Swooning. How can you put a price on that?
The dining area inside Bethesda Blues & Jazz is most inviting. I especially like sitting on the side, facing out onto the main floor and stage. Service is professional and relatively attentive (although my water glass stayed empty throughout the night... not good) and the menu is varied enough, and decidedly grown-up (no burgers or chicken wings to speak of.)
Best of all (and unlike most comedy or supper clubs) there's only a $10 minimum for food & drink. I wanted more appetizer choices (only four) but there are four salads, a soup of the day and six impressive entrees to choose from. The NY Strip comes with a sun-dried tomato polenta cake and French-style green beans with a cherry tomato on top. I prefer my beans a little more tender; but the polenta cake (great texture) was plenty satisfying, and the perfect compliment to a huge steak.
Speaking of... what a piece of meat! It arrived MEDIUM (as requested) and full of lush, natural juices with a nice char on the exterior. Outside of some side fat, it was close to perfect. Seasoning was simple (salt & pepper) but generously applied. More often than not, spices are sprinkled on top... hardly seen, and (more importantly) barely tasted. Thankfully, not so on this occasion. I let out several audible oohs and aahs; and cleared my plate of everything, save for a couple of beans. Delicious.
My guest devoured her Caramel Cheesecake, and our plates were cleared promptly. We did receive a second, identical bill after I had already paid the first with my credit card; but that was quickly rectified, after a word with our initial server. So far, BB&J is batting 1.000 (this was my third tasty meal in three tries) and the show afterwards was terrific. What more can you ask for?
