Colonials Erase 4-2 Deficit to Stun Columbia; Finish With National Ranking of No. 9 in the Nation
The No. 11 George Washington women's squash team erased a 4-2 deficit to stun No. 9 Columbia and win the Kurtz Cup (B-Division) Championship at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Nationals on Sunday at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
GW (14-5) finishes the 2013-14 season ranked No. 9 in the College Squash Association, the highest ranking in program history. Additionally, the Kurtz Cup Championship is the program's first title at the B-Division level and third title overall after twice winning the Walker Cup (C-Division) in 2010 and 2012.
The Colonials rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win the final three matches and stun No. 9 Columbia (8-7).
Freshman Mehak Chawla provided the first win of the day in a gritty five-set performance against Diya Kumar at No. 9, winning 10-12, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9, 11-5.
Freshman Breanne Flynn won her single-season record tying 16th match of the season with a 3-0 sweep at No. 2 to give the Colonials their second win of the day and pull within two points of the lead at 4-2. Flynn's 16 victories tie the program record of teammate Anna Gabriela Porras, who won 16 matches in her freshman season.
Senior Jackie Shea dominated her match at No. 4, 11-5, 11-5, 11-5, over Reyna Pacheco to make the score 4-3 and sophomore Anna Gabriela Porras tallied a sweep of 11-6, 11-3, 11-8 over Colette Sultana at No. 1 to tie the match at 4-4.
Sophomore Eunice Tan took a quick 2-0 lead at No. 7 over Alisha Maity to put the Colonials on the brink of the title but took a setback in the third set. She composed herself and closed out the match with a clinching victory of 11-5, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7 to clinch the championship.
Select individuals will compete in next weekend's CSA Individual Nationals at the University of Pennsylvania. Official draws will be announced later this week.
