Colonials Post Biggest Win Since 2006 with 94-50 Rout of Delaware State
Six players reached double figures as the George Washington men's basketball team continued its best start in four seasons with a 94-50 victory over Delaware State at the Charles E. Smith Center on Tuesday.
GW, which received a vote in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll, improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2009 with its most one-sided win since a 94-49 rout of Dartmouth on Nov. 14, 2006.
The Colonials now have nine days to prepare for a Thanksgiving Day clash with Miami (Fla.) in the opening game of the Wooden Legacy at Cal State Fullerton. That game will be nationally televised on ESPNU at 2 p.m. ET.
Senior Isaiah Armwood led an all-around team effort with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals in 21 minutes. Freshman Nick Griffin buried all four of his three-point attempts en route to 14 points, while graduate student Maurice Creek made a trio of threes to finish with 11 points, along with sophomore Patricio Garino. Sophomore Kevin Larsen scored in double figures for the fifth straight game dating back to last season with 10 points, and classmate Paris Maragkos added a career-high 10 points off the bench.
GW, the Atlantic 10's highest scoring team at 89.5 points per game, shot a scorching 60 percent (35-58), aided by 25 assists, nine dunks and 10-of-17 shooting behind the arc, en route to their third game with 80-or-more points this season. The Colonials also owned sizable advantages in rebounding (41-24), points in the paint (44-18), fast-break points (16-4) and bench points (48-16).
Delaware State (1-3) scored the opening basket 1:39 into the game, then GW responded with an 11-0 run sparked by six points from Larsen to go ahead for good. Ten players entered the scoring column, with Griffin and Creek combining for five 3-pointers, as the Colonials shot 60 percent and held the Hornets to 28 percent shooting to build a 54-19 halftime advantage.
The margin never dipped below 34 points and peaked at 49 on Garino's third dunk of the night to make it 92-43 with 2:31 remaining.
The Hornets were led by Kendall Gray's 15 points, six rebounds and five blocks.
GW will play three games in four days at the Wooden Legacy in California before returning home to host the BUFF OUT at the Charles E. Smith Center against Rutgers on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
