The
UDC Men's Soccer Team returned from a 2 1/2 week layoff caused by the government shutdown, and defeated conference foe
Roberts Wesleyan 2-1 at home this afternoon. The Firebirds improved their overall record to 7-4 (2-3 in the ECC) surpassing their win total from last year (six) in the process.
Freshman star
Felix Angerer scored his fifth goal of the season early on, to put UDC up 1-0: It was one of a team-high
six shots on the day. Senior defender
Bakary Coulibaly entered the game with less than 15 minutes remaining in the first half, and scored almost immediately... converting on his team-high sixth goal of the season at the 33:39 mark to put UDC up 2-0. Goalie
Louis Connor made one save (3 total for the game) to keep the lead at two, going into halftime. UDC's suffocating defense took care of the rest.
It was a dominant first half for the Firebirds, who outshot Roberts Wesleyan 11-3 (19-14 for the game.) Connor was barely challenged, and UDC easily could have led by more. The second half was a bit different as the Redhawks went on the offensive, racking up 11 shots of their own. Despite lots of pressure, they couldn't score until Brandon Bianchi converted a cross from Johnny Lobene to cut UDC's lead to 2-1 with just over 10 minutes left in the game. UDC played keep away for the rest of the game, securing a much-needed conference win.
Hats off to my "Hero of the Day"
Jose Garcia, who had a dirty jersey just minutes in, and made countless plays that didn't show up in the final box score. He also got nailed in the back with two of the hardest shots I've seen all season, yet stayed in the game. Three cheers for Jose, who sadly has only one home game remaining.
UDC hits the road for a three-game stretch, beginning with an ECC showdown vs.
Queens College tomorrow at 2:30 PM; before returning home next Wednesday for a Senior Day clash with #1 ranked
LIU Post.
