10th place? Perhaps the ECC coaches would like a moment to reconsider their
preseason poll? The
UDC men's soccer team opened their 2013 campaign with a resounding 4-1 victory over
Holy Family in front of an enthusiastic (even
raucous) home crowd yesterday afternoon. You could
feel the energy at UDC Athletic Field, a noticeable difference over years past: There was even
heckling on our behalf. Heckling!
After giving up a goal to Tigers' junior
Justin Massaro only three minutes in, the Firebirds responded with four straight goals... three in the first half alone. Sophomore
Elio Hernandez tied things up in the 11th minute, on a sweet feed from freshman
Felix Angerer. Less than two minutes later, freshman
Sam Rowden converted a long pass from goalkeeper (and fellow Brit)
Louis Connor to put UDC up for good 2-1. Rowden... This dude is fast! Angerer scored a goal of his own just before the 35th minute, rebounding his own penalty kick for a 3-1 lead: The 6-3 forward finished with a goal and two assists. Junior midfielder
Byron Brown rounded out the scoring, with a late goal in the second half (off a nice pass from Rowden.)
Connor played terrific in goal, stopping all but one of 13 Holy Family shots on goal (4 official saves.) The Tigers actually outshot UDC 13-10 and 4-1 in corners; but UDC's interior defense came up big when necessary. UDC looks to improve to 2-0 on Sunday, when they host
Goldey-Beacom from Delaware. That game starts at 1:00 PM: The Redskins don't play until Monday night, so there's no excuse to miss
this game (especially when you consider it's FREE to get in.)
