Terps Sweep Colonials at GW Invitational
So much for warm-ups: The George Washington women's volleyball team jumped into the deep end of Charles E. Smith Center, opening their 2013 campaign with an evening battle vs. the Maryland Terrapins yesterday. The crosstown Terps outlasted the Lady Colonials in three tight sets 29-27, 25-21, 25-18 before an enthusiastic crowd of 740.
Last night's contest was part of the annual GW Invitational, a four-team tournament that also includes Ole Miss and UMBC: The Rebels topped UMBC 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-14) in the late game. GW will play both teams later today in a day-night doubleheader (UMBC at 10:00 AM, Ole Miss at 7:00 PM.)
Junior Kelsey Newman (#15) shows some touch |
GW led 24-22 in the first set; before the Terps called a time out, and rallied to score three straight points on a pair of Colonial miscues. Maryland junior (and honorable mention All-American) Ashleigh Crutcher sealed the comeback with an ace on set point to put Maryland ahead 1-0: Talk about drama. The Colonials hung with Maryland for most of the second set before fading down the stretch. Senior Rachel Goss led GW with 11 kills and 12.5 points. Junior Kelsey Newman added 8 kills and 10 digs; while new libero Maddy Boyle made her first start, responding with an impressive 18 digs. Transfer student Jordan Timmer made a good first impression as well, pacing GW with 26 assists.
Senior Rachel Goss (#1) attempts to block |
Maryland walked away winners of the first official competition on the new Larry "Tex" Silverman court (which BTW looked really nice.) Something tells me GW will get their first taste of victory today vs. UMBC, a team that has a 1-20 record vs. the Colonials in GW Invitational play. Tickets are still available for today's four games (two double-headers) by clicking here. $6 per session, or $15 for all games.
