Light Er Up!

Just in case you didn't notice it already, the Washington Monument is about to get a lot more luminous. Beginning tonight, the National Park Service will turn on a total of 488 lamps to "shed some light" on the world's tallest obelisk, currently cloaked in scaffolding and a blue, semi-transparent fabric.

Each night at dusk, sensors will activate the area's best new light show... until repairs to the Monument are complete (sometime in early 2014.) The Monument is currently undergoing extensive repairs caused by the 2011 earthquake. Tonight's lighting will be presided over by NPS Superintendent for the Mall Robert Vogel, and should get under way around 8:30. The informal ceremony will include a performance by the U.S. Army Brass Band.
