Purge Shocks at Box Office

Ethan Hawke in The Purge

It wasn't a good weekend for Wedding Crashers... even if they were attached to the world's #1 search engine: 20th Century Fox's The Internship crashed and burned, placing fourth overall with a less-than-hoped-for $18.1 million bow. Meanwhile, Universal's The Purge shocked everyone by finishing #1 and doubling its expected opening. The Ethan Hawke-starrer was made for pennies ($3 million) but took home $36.4 million to lead an otherwise down week overall for overall box office totals.

This week last year proved very profitable for Hollywood, thanks to the openings of Madagascar 3 and Prometheus. Fast & Furious 6 passed the $200 million mark domestically (as did Star Trek Into Darkness) and finished second ($19.8 million) just ahead of Now You See Me ($19.5M.) Last week's #5 Epic rounded out the top five again this week with an additional $12.1 million, bringing its 17-day stateside total to $84.2 million.

While Fast & Furious 6 ($202.9M) and Into Darkness ($200.1M) passed the two-century mark, Marvel's Iron Man 3 closed in on double that: Tony Stark's alias took in another $5.8 million this weekend (good for 9th place) and should top $400 million sometime this week. But wait a sec... Look up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. It's Man of Steel, opening Friday. Let the games begin anew!
