Sausage flatbread Pizza at Cosi |
I'm a big fan of the freshly baked flatbread served at Cosi. Available as free samples, sandwich covers and the base of Cosi's tasty pizzas, these open-flame hearth-produced delights put Subway's fresh bread (and just about everyone else) to shame. Today's use? A sausage flatbread pizza for two, 16 bite-size slices of goodness for just $11.99.
I'm a firm believer that the crust makes the pizza. Cosi offers regular and thin crust: We chose the latter. You can get also choose an individual (eight slices) or shareable (the aforementioned 16.) Topping choices are plentiful: Margherita, Chicken Margherita, Traditional Cheese, Pepperoni or Sausage, Chicken & Spinach and Smoky BBQ Chicken. Take that California Pizza Kitchen! They take just under 10 minutes to prepare, and are delivered to your table by one of Cosi's friendly associates. I love 'em.
Today's variety was another winner. Although the cheese could have used another minute or two to finish cooking; the crust was done perfectly. Ditto for the nice-sized chunks of sausage (in generous supply.) The size of the slices is perfect, and prevents overeating (at least I think/hope it does.) Along with a couple of sodas, lunch for two came to just $17.57 (and we only ate half of it... The other half got boxed up for lunch tomorrow. Value. Value. Value.
The tomato base is hearty and delicious, and a blend of mozzarella with Romano cheese brings it all together. Cosi may be the most underrated sandwich chain in the area (their sandwiches are killer, and you haven't lived until you've had a Sausage & Pepper Frittata for breakfast.)
Atmosphere: B- (It gets pretty hot inside the Chevy Chase location... even hotter when it's full, like today)
Service: B (Always good here.)
Crust: B+ (Bread does make a difference.)
Toppings: B (Another minute in the heat, and the cheese would have been perfect.)
Value: B
Overall: B (Better than some pizzerias. A little too hot and noisy to rank higher this go around.)
