Firebirds Explode for 100, Crush NYIT

Junior Quasim Jones tied a school record with 16 assists

Now that's how you snap a seven-game losing streak! The UDC men's basketball team wiped the home floor with the New York Institute of Technology last night, winning 100-67 behind a season-high 18 three-pointers... including five each by guards Keith Brooks and Quasim Jones.

The win, just UDC's third of the season couldn't have arrived at a better time: The visiting Bears were 14-7 and 8-3 in the ECC coming into the game. To win by 33 against a team with a decidedly better record is surprising, but better yet... a testament to how good UDC can be. Brooks led the Firebirds with 23 points, hitting five of seven treys; while Jones scored 17 to go along with 16 assists (tying Nigel Munson's school record) and zero turnovers in 40 minutes.

Unlike in games past, UDC jumped out to an early big lead, 24-10 on a Ralph Watts (18 points) layup with 11:30 left in the first half. By halftime, the Firebirds had built that margin up to 28, thanks in part to an unbelievable 76.9% shooting (10-13) from beyond the arc. UDC had five scorers in double-figures, and all eight players scored.

Junior (and former Firebird) Phil Izevbehai led NYIT with 14 points and six rebounds in a losing effort. UDC (3-17, 2-10) looks for their first road win of the season this Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas (4-17, 4-8) before returning home to face LIU Post (13-6, 8-3) on February 13th (SAAC Canned Foods Game.) Remember UDC fans, just three home games left; so be sure to come out and support your Firebirds!
