GW Tips Off Regular Season with Loss

Isaiah Armwood (32) tips off vs. Youngstown State

This wasn't the season opening head coach Mike Lonergan had in mind for this year's George Washington Colonials men's basketball team. GW came out flat in the first half, and allowed costly turnovers and poor free throw shooting to spoil a spirited comeback, as the Colonials fell to Youngstown State 80-73 in front of a spirited home crowd of 2,198 at Charles E. Smith Center.

The loss overshadowed a stellar debut for senior Isaiah Armwood, who led GW with 18 points in 31 minutes: The 6'9 forward added five rebounds and a block to his impressive line. Freshman Patricio Garino also shined in his first regular season game, scoring 13 points with a team-high seven boards and two steals. Unfortunately, their teammates couldn't keep up, as the Colonials trailed by 11 at halftime.

An injury to freshman Kethan Savage meant more playing time for Bryan Bynes, who couldn't get anything going this afternoon. The senior guard played 26 minutes but had just one assist and two points on 1-9 shooting from the field and an atrocious 0-5 from the free throw line (including 4 key misses at the end of the game, when GW still had a chance to force OT or win.) Year after year, GW never seems to make free throws: I can't for the life of me understand why this is allowed to continue.

Senior Bryan Bynes missed 4 clutch FTs towards the end

GW looks to get back on track next Saturday on the road vs. Boston University. The Colonials return home on November 24th to battle Hofstra. In between, coach Lonergan and his team will travel to Notre Dame to face the Fighting Irish on November 21st.
