Junior Jamie Armstrong (3) leads Colonials over UMBC |
The George Washington women's volleyball team won its home opener in dramatic fashion last night, edging UMBC 3-2 (25-15, 19-25, 26-24, 16-25, 15-7) before an announced crowd of 367 at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Junior Jamie Armstrong and 2011 A-10 1st Team All-Conference Lauren Whyte led a balanced attack with 18 and 21.5 points respectively. Whyte topped the Colonials with 19 kills, while Armstrong racked up an impressive .591 attack percentage (a career-high.) After opening the season 0-6, GW has a modest two game win streak as it prepares for tomorrow's Maryland Invitational opener against nationally ranked Tennessee (5:00 PM at Comcast Pavilion in College Park.)
The atmosphere at Smith Center was terrific, especially given the size of the crowd. As a men's basketball season ticket holder, I was overwhelmed by the exuberance displayed by fans and players alike. This was my first women's volleyball match, but I guarantee you it won't be my last.
The Colonials return to Smith Center on September 14th to host Princeton in the GW/Nike Invitational, part of a five-game home stand.
