National Zoo Unveils American Trail

Zoogoers gather at the new American Trail exhibit

It takes a while to get to (past the Great Cats, to the right) but the National Zoo opened its American Trail this afternoon, allowing zoogoers a chance to visit bald eagles, California sea lions and grey wolves in their dazzling new digs.

Big crowds were on hand to get the first public peak at the $42 million trail. The exhibit features two new pools (for sea lions and seals) totaling almost half-a-million gallons of water, as well as eight animals rescued from the wild. Click here for a virtual tour of the exhibit.

Best of all, it's free. The Zoo is open every day of the year (save Christmas) with summer hours (6:00 AM - 8:00 PM) in effect through October.
