Not So Fancy Cakes by Leslie

Best known for beautiful wedding cakes, Fancy Cakes by Leslie offers an attractive selection of cupcakes for customers and passersby alike. Since I'm not getting married anytime soon, I decided to pop in and try one of their single cupcakes. The verdict? Let's just say, I'm glad to be single.

When I walked in, I immediately noticed that this is a place to buy wedding cakes (not cupcakes.) Undeterred, I ordered a lemon with coconut cupcake from a super-friendly sales associate. To her credit, she didn't make me feel as though my purchase meant little to nothing (even though at $3.50, it probably didn't mean anything.)

She proceeded to put my cupcake in a plastic container, but I declined... informing her of my intentions to devour it there on the premises. Seating is plentiful, but obviously designed for cake ordering and tasting. My cupcake looked beautiful: The coconut sprinkles were the perfect amount and clung to the thick heaping of lemon icing (I hate when when you take a bite, and coconut flies everywhere.) Unfortunately, I came to eat cupcakes... not look at them. My cake was hard as a rock... way too dense to consume, yet alone enjoy. I was surprised to find the thick layer of lemon icing to have little to no taste of lemon. To be honest, it was hard to finish.

Great customer service saved the experience from being a total disaster; but I can only hope the reason for the perceived staleness of my cake was the fact that they don't sell a lot of single cakes.
