UDC Men’s Basketball Defeats Bloomfield 84-77
The
University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team defeated
Bloomfield College 84-77 to stay undefeated at home. The Firebirds improved to 3-1, while the Bears fell to 2-1 on the season.
Senior
Zachary Olukanni scored his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Juanye Colon led the Firebirds with 28 (just two points shy of his season high 30) points, going 5-10 at the three-point line.
The Firebirds took and were able to maintain the lead the entire first half with a 54.5% shot percentage from the Field, while holding the Bears to only 40%. Colon was on fire going 50% at the three-point line and leading the field with 15 points.
Dontay Julius scored 14 points for the Bears going a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line, but Bloomfield trailed behind the Firebirds 43-37 going into the half.
The second quarter saw the Bears capitalizing on free throws. going 16-18 at the line.
Matt Lajeunesse went 6-8 from the field on 16 points and scooped up 10 rebounds. Bloomfield was able to tie the game 65-65 with 7:21 remaining but picked up a foul soon after, which allowed the Firebirds to regain the lead. The Firebirds eventually pulled away to win the game 84-77. Olukanni and Colon had identical second half stats, each putting up 13 points and three rebounds to help the Firebirds to a 50% shot percentage from the field and to their third straight victory of the season.
Next up, UDC (3-1) will travel to New Jersey on November 20th to face off against
Georgian Court.
