Captain Marvel Movie Review

Brie Larson stars in Captain Marvel

It's a Girl

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes, when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Starring: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law

What's Good: She's no Wonder Woman, but Larson proves capable and likable in a pressure-packed starring debut. Trouble is, filmmakers Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck (uh-oh, two directors) saddle her with a confusing story, dull co-stars (groan, Annette Benning) and even weaker villains. Coupled with so-so visuals, and a maddening back-and-forth between dimensions, storylines, etc., it's enough to make a grown man cry (or fall asleep, like I did.)

What's Not: See above + the fact that I still don't understand it, even after reading various explanations.

Budget: $152-175 million

Runtime: 124 minutes (Almost an hour too long.)

Target Audience: Females & Marvel fanatics.

Bottom Line: Nick Fury was right. She does look like she's, "dressed for Laser Tag," but I believe Captain Marvel will get better with time (not to mention a different director/screenwriters.) On paper, she looks like a keeper, but someone needs to let her blast off and prove it. Until then...

Grade: D+
