Colonials Set to Host Eight Games in Smith Center, Including the Season Opener vs. Stony Brook on November 6

The GW men’s basketball team announced its non-conference schedule for the 2018-19 season on Monday, and it features eight home contests along with several away-from-home tests, including a trip to Virginia and a date with Michigan in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.

The Colonials open the season with a couple of home games which are part of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament, as Stony Brook visits Smith Center on November 6 and Siena comes to town on November 8.

A difficult five-game stretch featuring four opponents who finished last season ranked with a top-90 RPI ensues on November 11 at Virginia, which is coming off a 31-3 season. The Colonials won the last meeting when the Cavaliers were ranked sixth in the nation on November 16, 2015, and have split the all-time series with 24 wins apiece.

GW then heads to Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, to face 2018 national runner-up Michigan on November 17. A day later, the Colonials will face either South Carolina or Providence, with the Friars being a potential third straight opponent coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance.

“Our non-conference schedule will challenge us while preparing our team for what will undoubtedly be another tough Atlantic 10 field,” said head coach Maurice Joseph. “Our young core will have early opportunities to play some experienced and talented teams that will help our development as we continue to build to reach our program goals.”

After a break for Thanksgiving, GW returns home to host Manhattan (November 24) and Vermont (November 28.) The game with the Catamounts, who went 27-8 and won the America East Conference regular season title last year, is part of a home-and-home agreement.

The Colonials then play at Princeton on December 1 before finishing the slate with four of their last five in Smith Center. New home-and-home series begin with Towson (December 5) and Valparaiso (December 8) in Foggy Bottom, as well as Harvard (December 22) on the road. GW will also play host to a pair of local foes in Howard (December 14) and American (December 29.)

Fans’ first chance to see the Colonials in action will be October 28 with an exhibition vs. Catholic University. Dates and times for GW’s 18-game Atlantic 10 slate will be announced later but pairings can be found above.

GW returns a pair of starters in junior Arnaldo Toro, who led the team in rebounding last year, and sophomore Terry Nolan Jr., who led the Colonials in steals while ranking fourth in scoring. Two fourth-year student-athletes - 6-foot-1 guard Armel Potter and 6-foot-7 wing DJ Williams - join the mix after sitting out last season as transfers. Potter averaged 13.3 points in two seasons at Charleston Southern, while Williams came from the University of Illinois looking to join a long list of high-major transfers who have flourished in Foggy Bottom.

A talented and well-balanced freshman class features local standout wing Mezie Offurum, a 6-foot-6 product of Georgetown Prep; 5-foot-10 point guard Shandon Brown from Boston; and 6-foot-9 forward Marcus Littles from prep power Neumann Goretti in Philadelphia. The trio adds to GW’s young core, which also includes rising sophomores Justin Mazzulla, Maceo Jack and Javier Langarica.

Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting getGWtix.com or calling the box office at (202) 99-GWTIX. Game times and television broadcast details will be announced at a later date.
