Safeway Foundation Awards $336,500 in Cancer Campaign Grants, Supporting Cancer Research, Testing and Treatment Programs
Safeway Foundation today announced the distribution of $336,500 in grant donations issued to 13 local and regional organizations actively engaged in cancer research and treatment.
Throughout the month of May, Safeway Foundation and Safeway stores in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Florida conducted a fundraising campaign, collecting customer donations at checkout. Thanks to Safeway customers’ charitable giving, Safeway Foundation is now awarding grants to programs that provide cancer research, testing and treatment.
“Safeway has a long tradition of supporting causes that positively impact our communities, and we are proud to contribute funding to these 13 organizations that provide vital research on the prevention and treatment of cancers,” said Jim Perkins, Eastern Division President. "With the generosity of our customers’ charitable contributions, Safeway Foundation and Safeway are able to provide grants and fund even more organizations this year."
Organizations and programs that will receive Safeway Foundation grants are:
• American Institute for Cancer Research
• Arlington Free Clinic
• Bayhealth Foundation
• Children’s Research Institute
• Christ House
• Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition
• Doctors Community Hospital
• Hope Connections for Cancer Support
• National Foundation for Cancer Research
• Smith Center for Healing and the Arts
• The Children’s Cancer Foundation Inc.
• The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates Mammovan
• The National Pancreas Foundation
Washington, DC has one of the highest cancer rates in the country (130.3 per 100,000 cases), and the highest death rate from both breast cancer and liver cancer. Currently about 20,000 DC residents are living with cancer, with nearly 3,000 newly diagnosed cases each year.
Safeway Foundation, with the support of its customers, contributes to financing medical research and treatment programs that improve the lives of its neighbors, particularly those who have little or no access to care. Cancer research is one of the Foundation’s primary health-related causes, with the additional focus on funding organizations that increase participation in trials, access to preventative testing and access to alternative medicine.
