Hotel Artemis Movie Review

Jodie Foster stars in Hotel Artemis

Just Another Wednesday

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Set in riot-torn, near-future Los Angeles, Hotel Artemis is an original, high-octane action-thriller starring Jodie Foster as The Nurse, who runs a secret, members-only hospital for criminals. Jodie Foster is joined by an all-star cast that includes Sterling K. Brown, Sofia Boutella, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Tyree Henry, Jenny Slate, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Day, and Dave Bautista. Directed by Drew Pearce.

I wanted to love Pearce's directorial debut; but despite a superb cast and thrilling start, we'll have to settle for "above average." It's nice & short (95 minutes) but takes an annoyingly playful detour halfway through, which draws attention to several chinks in an otherwise impenetrable fortress. Too many bad guys for one, and a hurried pace that turns a thriller into a muddled/predictable mess. Foster and Brown are terrific, and even Bautista has his moments, but Goldblum's Wolf King of L.A. (and specifically his henchmen) turn out to be unwanted guests. Good idea. Unfortunately, not so good execution.

Grade: C+
