The Snowman Movie Review

Michael Fassbender stars in The Snowman

Lost in Alaska Oslo

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: When an elite crime squad's lead detective (Michael Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit (Rebecca Ferguson), the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall. Directed by Tomas Alfredson.

You know a movie's doomed when...
• Its director (Alfredson) apologizes and makes excuses before its release.
• It features an almost cartoonish and unnecessary appearance by Val Kilmer (complete with poorly done voice dubbing) and not one, but two ChloĆ« Sevignys (twins, no less.)
• Its main character is named Harry Hole (no really, Harry Hole.)

I could go on and on (Lego-like snowmen, random scenes that go nowhere) but despite all that, I actually found it fun to watch. It's a relatively effective mystery with an impressive cast (at its unfortunate worst.) Dead on arrival, but oddly enjoyable.

Grade: C
