D.J. Williams Joins GW Men’s Basketball

Illinois transfer and former top-100 recruit to be eligible in 2018-19

D.J. Williams, a former top-100 recruit out of Chicago who spent the past two seasons at the University of Illinois, has joined the GW men’s basketball team. Williams will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the upcoming season.

“We are thrilled to add a player of D.J.’s caliber to our program,” said head coach Maurice Joseph. “He will be a tremendous asset to us in practice this season as he prepares himself to assume an important role for our team in the future. We have had some recent success with talented transfers and we are all looking forward to D.J. adding to that trend.”

The 6-foot-7 guard was a consensus top-100 recruit coming out of Simeon High School, with Scout ranking him No. 46 nationally, ESPN No. 64 and 247Sports No. 91. He participated in USA Basketball’s U-17 training camp in the summer of 2014 and was a part of Simeon teams that won two IHSA Class 4A state titles.

“I chose GW because it was the perfect fit for my game, and trust also played a major role in the process,” said Williams. “I wanted to go to a program where I can trust the coaching staff, and I feel like I can finally show what I’m capable of here at GW. I’m excited for the future.”

At Illinois, Williams appeared in 46 games with averages of 10.2 minutes, 2.3 points and 1.2 rebounds, while shooting 41 percent from the floor. At GW, he’ll become one of two transfers sitting out the 2017-18 season, along with Charleston Southern transfer Armel Potter. Both will have two years of eligibility remaining starting in 2018-19.
