Cast Iron Cook-off, Tour de Camp + Shenandoah Trivia Night with REI DC

REI would like to invite you to some of the fun upcoming summer events with REI DC. A cast iron cook-off, ‘tour de camp’ equipment and set-up demonstration and Shenandoah trivia night will give locals a taste of REI’s Outdoor School offerings and is the perfect way to get ALL OUT this summer. Here's a list of upcoming events with details below...

Appalachian Throwdown - Friday, July 21, 5-10 PM, Wunder Garten, 1101 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002: Old, green, and winding south to north - we love our Appalachian Mountains here in the East. So, let's come together to celebrate them in style! We're taking over the Wunder Garten Beer Garden with outdoor trivia games, live music from Human Country Jukebox, an Appalachian Trail film screening, local outdoor non-profits, trip planning advice from the REI Adventure Station, DIY poster art, s'mores, food trucks and more. Part of our All Out Blue Ridge series of events. Price: FREE


Skillet Battle! - Saturday, July 22, 1-6 PM, Wunder Garten, 1101 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002: Think you have what it takes to go head-to-head in a cast iron skillet cooking competition? Or maybe your appetite is more for cheering on the competitors? How about we throw in some sweet prizes, cold beer, food sampling from local and national outdoor food brands, and some live music? Our amateur round cooking starts at 2 PM, prizes awarded at 3:30 PM. Professional chef round starts at 4 PM, prize awarded at 5:30 PM. Interested competitors should register at the link below! Tour de Camp - Saturday, July 29, 10 AM - 2 PM, DC REI, 201 M Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002: If there's one thing we know REALLY well, it's a sweet campsite. We'll set up our new DC Flagship store with 5 different ultimate campsite rigs for you to tour. From the tent to the pads to all the extra details, the sites will be built out with the very best gear for 5 different activities selected our expert staff. Come see the very best in 2017 camping gear! We'll have a hammock-centric backpacking setup, an ultimate car campsite for families, a breezy kayak camping setup, a campsite especially built for our gourmet camp chefs, and the bike packing setup of our dreams, ready built for C&O Canal towpath adventures. REI Staff will give demos of each site continuously from 10 AM -2 PM, and then at 2 PM we'll give one of them away!

Shenandoah Stewardship Project - Sunday, July 30, 8 AM - 2 PM, Big Meadows Picnic Grounds, Shenandoah National Park: Join Shenandoah's Backcountry Rangers, Trail Crew, and Natural Resource Technicians for a morning of stewardship, rehabilitating historic landscapes and wilderness areas around Big Meadows. We will break in to multiple groups and tackle projects like removing plants encroaching on meadow habitat, rehabilitating backcountry wilderness campsites, removing social trails to protect sensitive plant communities, and making historic horse trail rider-friendly again. We'll meet at 8 AM at the Big Meadows Picnic Grounds, then head out for a morning of work (snacks provided). We'll work until about 12:30 PM and then head back to the Big Meadows Picnic Grounds for a big lunch and a thank you gift for your hard work. Participants will need long pants and close-toed shoes. Bring a water bottle, insect repellent, and work gloves if you have them.

These are just some of the many things planned this summer, a big part of the co-op’s dedication to education and helping everyone across the DMV to live a life outdoors. REI’s experts - with the support of local like-minded organizations and non-profits like Shenandoah National Park Trust - are committed to offering the greater DC area access to outdoor education and activities year-round through its comprehensive Outdoor School programming.
