GW Men’s Basketball Brings Aboard Bo Zeigler
USF graduate transfer is eligible to play immediately
The GW men’s basketball team has bolstered its frontcourt for the 2017-18 season with the addition of graduate transfer forward Bo Zeigler, who completed his undergraduate studies at the University of South Florida.
Last season, Zeigler played in 28 games with 14 starts and ranked second on the team with a .545 field goal percentage, while averaging 4.7 points and 3.5 rebounds. The athletic 6-foot-6 native of Detroit also chipped in 40 assists, 21 steals and 19 blocks, marks that ranked third on the squad in each category.
“We are excited about adding Bo to the GW family,” said head coach Maurice Joseph. “His experience and elite athletic ability will allow us to be more versatile on both ends of the floor, which is something we are striving to accomplish through our recruiting efforts. He is a gritty leader and I look forward to having him cap off his college career as a Colonial.”
Zeigler (pronounced ZIGG-ler), who will exhaust his collegiate eligibility at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season, brings experience and a veteran presence to a GW squad with nine underclassmen on the roster. After redshirting as a freshman in 2013-14, Zeigler played in 91 games with 47 starts over three seasons with the Bulls.
“I chose GW because of the coaching staff and the opportunity to play for a prestigious university with a winning and hard-working reputation,” said Zeigler. “I love the fan base, conference, and the fact that it’s located in such a great area with great people.”
A product of Community High School in Detroit, Zeigler was rated as the No. 22 small forward nationally in the class of 2013 by ESPN. His athleticism was evident early in his USF career, as he led the team with 19 dunks including 12 alley-oops as a freshman, to go along with 35 blocks.
Since May, Joseph and his staff have added six scholarship student-athletes to the roster in freshmen Maceo Jack, Javier Langarica and Terry Nolan Jr., along with Zeigler, Armel Potter and DJ Williams who transferred from other institutions. Meanwhile, freshman Justin Mazzulla signed with the Colonials last fall, and two walk-ons are new to the program in sophomore forward Luke Sasser and senior guard Jack Granger.
Among GW’s six returnees, four started 10 or more games last season, led by senior guard Yuta Watanabe, who was second on the team in scoring (12.2 PPG) and rebounding (4.8 RPG) while earning Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team honors. Also returning will be graduate student forward Patrick Steeves (10.4 PPG over last 10 games), and two sophomores in forward Arnaldo Toro (team-best 11.0 rebounds/40 minutes) and guard Jair Bolden (started final 16 games.)
